Gheringhap Street Outfall
Protecting Geelong's CBD from Flooding
Large-Diameter RCP for a Major Stormwater Outfall
In 2019, Empire supplied 450 metres of CP&P DN1800 Reinforced Concrete Jacking Pipe (RCP) and Intermediate Jacking Station Pipes. The installation ran from the Mercer Street end of Gheringhap Street to the new outfall at Corio Bay, with the interjack configuration allowing Rob Carr to manage jacking forces across the full drive.
"A DN1800 microtunnelled outfall through a CBD requires the pipe to be right: correct specification, correct interjack configuration, and on site when the contractor needs it." Aaron Mackley, Director of Sales & Operations, Empire Infrastructure
Microtunnelling Without Surface Disruption
The alignment passed beneath active streets, a waterfront carpark, and a skate park, all of which remained accessible throughout construction. The project was completed in 2019 as part of the Revitalising Central Geelong Action Plan. Empire coordinated pipe supply to align with Rob Carr's tunnelling program, ensuring the full scope and interjack configuration were available without delay.
An Outfall That Serves a Growing City
The completed Gheringhap Street outfall has significantly reduced the frequency and duration of CBD flooding events, delivering a long-term benefit to businesses and residents in central Geelong. The project demonstrates Empire's capability to supply large-diameter RCP for complex, high-profile urban stormwater infrastructure across Victoria.
