Solving a Century-Old Combined Sewer Problem
GRP Selected for Performance and Program Certainty
In 2020, Empire supplied 360 metres of OD616, 365 metres of OD1127, and 210 metres of OD1499 BOSSPIPE™ Centrifugally Cast GRP (CC-GRP) Jacking Pipe. Discussions between Empire, March Constructions, and Rob Carr confirmed GRP was preferred over concrete for structural performance, light weight, and supply certainty.
"Picton Street required three pipe diameters through one program. CC-GRP gave the contractor consistency across every size." Aaron Mackley, Director of Sales & Operations, Empire Infrastructure
Multi-Diameter Microtunnelling in an Urban Corridor
Works required microtunnelling through a dense inner-city corridor with active traffic, residential buildings, and existing utilities in close proximity. Coordinating three pipe diameters within a single program added scheduling complexity. Empire staged supply, ensuring each diameter was available to match the contractor's tunnelling sequence.
Improved Network Resilience for a Growing City
The completed separation has materially reduced combined sewer overflows in Freemans Bay, delivering long-term improvements to water quality and system resilience for one of Auckland's most established residential areas. The project demonstrates Empire's capability to supply multiple large-diameter GRP pipe sizes across a complex multi-stage urban program in New Zealand.
