BREAKFAST CREEK TRUNK SEWER MAIN UPGRADE
CLIENT: Queensland Utilities – LOCATION: Breakfast Creek, Brisbane QLD, AUSTRALIA
In 2023, Empire Supplied just over 1 kilometer of CP&P DN1800 Reinforced Concrete Jacking Pipe with 2.5mm HDPE Liner to Rob Carr Pty Ltd for the construction of the Breakfast Creek Trunk Sewer Main Upgrade.
Located in the inner city suburb of Bowen Hills, near Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, the project was always going to throw up some challenges given the built up nature of the area and the Brisbane Tuff rock reaching figures up to 150MPa.
In a major upgrade to the wastewater system in this area, the project called for just over 1km of DN1800 pipe. The pipeline will cater for tens of thousands of people in the community with the population in the area expected to grow by almost 40,000 over the next few decades. The 9 metre diameter launch shaft was built using Macrete Smoothbore shaft segments also supplied by Empire. From this point – the single drive of approx. 1005 metres began. The pipeline crossed underneath a multitude of existing infrastructure, including several rail lines and 2 major freeways.
Empire was extremely excited to supply pipe for such a project. Manager of Sales and Operations Aaron Mackley stated “We love a challenge and this project certainly provided that challenge. With a 1km plus single curved drive that had to go under critical infrastructure such as rail lines and freeways, we knew the pipe had to be of a very high quality. The CP&P jacking pipe was up to the task. Setting a few tunnelling records along the way!”
Rob Carr used a 29 t Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine. The TBM was named Leila Perry after the granddaughter of George Edmonstone. In the late 1800’s, George Edmondson contributed significantly the Brisbane area. The family has also gifted the land where construction of the project is taking place. The 29 t MTBM is also one-of-a-kind, having been transformed into a colorful work of art created by a local high school student. The design is inspired by Brisbane, representing the city’s iconic jacaranda trees, the Brisbane River and Story Bridge.
